Good evening, KIPPsters!
We made it! At noon today we sent our kiddos home to enjoy their summer and rest and prepare for the next amazing year here at KIPP: Prime. I am so so so proud of everything we've accomplished this year as the founding class of KIPP: Prime Artists. This year, our students:
Practiced creating narrative in art and authored some funny, heartbreaking, and fascinating comics in pen & ink. (Some of our students fell in love...and have been creating notebooks full of comics to swap and share with their friends all year long! It's been a joy to watch their passion flourish.)
Mastered color theory and painted several incredible works of watercolor art! (The "Birch Trees Watercolor" was one of the student's favorites, and I loved decorating our room with the "Stained Glass Watercolor.")
Practiced the art of mindfulness by creating Zentangles, notes of positivity and gratitude to share with teachers and classmates, and holiday cards to express joy to loved ones.
Took to paper sculpture like ducks to water and built astoundingly creative and endearing mountain scenes, citiscapes, underwater creatures, skateparks, etc. which we have been proudly displaying on our lockers ever since.
[FOCUSED ON] key elements of art like mood, light, contrast, integrity, and ingenuity and their cross-curricular applications.
Learned to think abstractly about the way perception alters reality, understood how (biologically) our eyes and brains play a crucial role in the artistic process, and created mind-bending 3-D Illusions.
Considered the profound social impact of public art and PAINTED A MURAL!
I cannot express how grateful I have been for this year. I feel like I have learned and grown so much as a (I can finally admit) first-year teacher.

It is bitter-sweet to announce that I will not be returning to KIPP: Prime next year. My adventure will continue in another direction (specifically, Australia!). However, I have had the true privilege of getting to know my successor, Ms. Akilah Ali, through Art Professionals days this year. She is coming from another KIPP school in the Houston area, and is generally amazing. I have no doubt that she will make this coming year an equally fabulous one for our KIPP: Prime Artists.
So to each of my Prime Artists: thank you for all you have taught me this year. And thank you for the pictures, memories, and, of course, all the fabulous art! I will miss each of you, but I know you'll give Ms. Ali your best and that this summer and the 2018-19 school year will be the best yet!
That's all for now, KIPPsters! Have a great summer! It's Prime T.I.M.E.!
