Finally Rollin' Along!

It's another beautiful Monday at KIPP: Prime! Our artists have been hard at work for the past couple of weeks creating their incredible comics! I'ts been such a joy to watch their enthusiasm for art flourish.
What we've been up to:

Students are about a week and a half into their first major art project: comic strips! They've been having a whole lot of fun brainstorming their ideas and creating their storyboards. And I've been having a lot of fun getting to see our KIPPsters' awesome senses of humor. :)
We decided to do comic strips for two reasons. First is the huge love of comics in our school! Our kiddos love, love, LOVE graphic novels. I also love drawing and reading comics, so I have been so excited to watch our Prime Artists get so into the assignment!
The second source is my desire to give our KIPPsters the opportunity to express their thoughts about Hurricane Harvey if they wish (and some have!), but many of the students just do not want to talk more about it any more. That is also totally fine! They are welcome to tell another story (and many have done that as well!).
Where we're headed:

This week and next week, we'll be finishing up our comic strips. The students will have the chance to give each other feedback and make notes about what they'd like to improve before they start turning their storyboards into real comics!
We will also be practicing with real artists tools to make our artwork look professional!
Our next unit will have us working with color and pastels, so be on the look out for some colorful artwork featured in our galleries soon!

Big news!
We have a new KIPPster on the block! Meet Hagrid, our newest cheerleader! He'll be hanging out in his tank on the back counter and watching us create masterpieces all year long. He has an official page on our Prime Artists website, and you can learn more about bearded dragons here.
That's all for now! Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
It's Prime T.I.M.E.!
